How to calculate SGPA
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of your grade points for one semester. The formula most Indian universities use:
SGPA = (Sum of grade points × credits for each subject) ÷ Total credits
- Multiply each subject's grade point by its credits.
- Add all of these up.
- Divide by the total credits of the semester.
Grade points (10-point scale)
Most universities follow this scale, but it can vary — always check your university's rules:

Example
Three subjects: 4 credits with A (8), 3 credits with B+ (7), 2 credits with O (10).
(4×8 + 3×7 + 2×10) ÷ 9 = (32 + 21 + 20) ÷ 9 = 73 ÷ 9 = 8.11 SGPA.

What is SGPA?

How is SGPA different from CGPA?
SGPA is for one semester only. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines your SGPAs across all semesters of your degree.

A common approximation used in India is Percentage = SGPA × 9.5. But the exact formula differs by university, so check your university's official conversion rule.
What is a good SGPA?
Generally 8.0 and above is considered good, 9.0+ is excellent. But what matters most is meeting your own goals — for placements, many companies ask for 7.0+ or 7.5+.
Does SGPA include failed subjects?
Failed subjects (F grade = 0 points) still count their credits in the total, which pulls your SGPA down. Clearing backlogs quickly protects your SGPA.
